Fun Facts About Language Learning

Learning a second language can be an extremely rewarding adventure. And there are more than 7000 to choose from! Whether you’re a multilingual speaker or taking on the challenge of second language learning for the first time, here are some of the most interesting facts about language learning.

The Most Widely Spoken Languages

Did you know Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken native language in the world? However, if you count native and non-native speakers, English is the most spoken language. The second highest language with native speakers is Spanish. Chinese is the second highest language with both native and non-native speakers. Hindi is also among the most spoken languages, with the fourth most native speakers and third most native and non-native speakers.

Taking On the Challenge

When it comes to difficulty, Arabic and Chinese are considered the most difficult second languages to learn. Following this are Japanese and Korean. These languages are especially difficult for non-Western speakers, as the alphabet, writing system, tonal sounds, and grammar patterns are completely different from Latin or Germanic languages.

Boost For The Brain

Studies have shown that there are numerous benefits to multi-language learning. Speaking a second language helps to grow the part of the brain that is responsible for spatial navigation and retaining information. As such, speaking more than one language can help prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
