Babar the elephant has just been born in the jungle. Soon after, a hunter kills his mother and Babar has to get to safety in the city. There she meets an old lady who will be her best friend.
Jean deBrunhoff. (1899-1937) was a French writer and illustrator best known for being the co-creator of Babar, the elephant protagonist of a series of children's books, first published in 1931.  After the first volume he published another six titles. Jean de Brunhoff is buried in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France.
